How Often Should You Really Visit the Dentist?

"Every six months" is the number most of us grow up with, and for a lot of patients it's still the right interval. But it's a guideline, not a rule — your ideal recall schedule depends on how quickly you form plaque, whether you have gum disease, and your history of decay.

Patients with well-controlled oral hygiene and no active issues can sometimes stretch to nine or twelve months between visits. Patients with a history of gum disease, orthodontic appliances, or high cavity risk often do better on a three- or four-month cycle.

The safest approach is to let your dentist set the interval after an exam, rather than defaulting to a fixed number. At your next visit, ask what your ideal recall schedule should be.
